Imperial Palace Innsbruck

In the footsteps of Maria Theresa, Sisi and Maximilian I

The Imperial Palace (Hofburg) Innsbruck represents a significant part of the architectural patrimony of the Republic of Austria. Located in the heart of the Tyrolean capital, it has seen many rulers come and go, the most famous of whom were Maximilian, Maria Theresia and Sisi.

Emperor Maximilian I extended the Imperial Palace built by his predecessors and added the Wappenturm or Crest Tower and the Golden Hall. Another extension to the Imperial Palace was the armoury, where the Noblewomen’s Collegiate Foundation founded by Maria Theresia is situated today. Between 1750 and 1770 the Innsbruck Imperial Palace was reconfigured in the Baroque style. Later, in the 19th century, the apartment of Empress Elisabeth, which today has been faithfully restored, was created.

On the 500th anniversary of the death of Maximilian in 2019, using modern technology to set the scene, together with digital media, the Burghauptmannschaft Österreich organised a permanent exhibition dedicated to the personality of Emperor Maximilian and his times. From May 2023, the permanent exhibition Maximilian1 will focus on the theme of the
